Transform Hoxton

We believe that God loves Hoxton and wants us to work for everyone in this neighbourhood.

“seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper“ (Jeremiah 29:7)

How we pursue social transformation

We believe that social transformation is best served by pursuing justice, not simply doing mercy.

We believe in ‘doing with’ rather than ‘doing for’ - and we seek to build partnerships that transform the unjust structures of society, not just apply sticking plasters to wounds.

Most of our efforts in social transformation are occasional and responsive to local need and opportunity.

We work closely in partnership with Citizens UK, and apply principles of broad-based community organising to all our programmes.

Listed below are a few of the key partnerships and programmes with which we’re involved

Psalms & Stretches

Psalms & Stretches is a gentle exercise class where stretching and moving your body is combined with meditating on scripture – a place where wellbeing meets worship.

Psalms & Stretches is for anyone - and is a great way to support your emotional, mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing.

CAP Debt Centre & Money Course

The CAP Money Course is a revolutionary money management course that teaches people budgeting skills and a simple, cash-based system that really works. In addition to the CAP Money Course, CAP's free debt help service runs here, at St John's Hoxton, so you get practical help and a supportive community around you through whatever challenges you’re facing. We’ll help you find the best route out of debt, and walk with you every step of the way.

Hackney Foodbank

We partner with the Hackney Foodbank to tackle food poverty in our neighbourhood. Every Monday, from 11am-1pm we host a Foodbank Centre in our church crypt.

Ivy St Family Centre

The amazing Ivy St Family Centre was founded in partnership with St John’s Hoxton almost 40 years ago. They work to support local families across our neighbourhood.

Sing For A Change

Our amazing community organising choir singing songs of love, truth and justice has been silenced for a while by Covid - but hope to be back soon.

Citizens UK

We are part of a community organising alliance with Citizens UK, and we belong to the Hackney & Islington Citizens chapter. All our action on local issues is rooted in listening, and seeks to achieve real change with and for our neighbours.

Live At St John’s

We host a monthly community music night in our beautiful 19th century church building. As well as hearing some of the best emerging music in the country, you get to enjoy wood-fired oven pizza, a pop-up bar, and great company and conversation.
